Optimal control of differential equations with algebraic constraints

Instationary differential equations with algebraic constraints arise in many applications in particular in the modeling of multi-physics systems. The  optimal control of such systems is analytically and numerically a real challenge since one cannot apply the Pontryagin Maximum Principle. We derive the necessary optimality conditions and their properties, which are associated with self-adjoint differential operators and we also discuss their numerical solution. In the case of semi-discretized flow problems we discuss methods for the adaptive discretization of the control problem, that allow to reduce the computational effort substantially.
