Countering Spam

Recognizing spam already can pose a problem for humans. If a computer needs to solve this task, a flexible ad well configured software is necessary.

The Department of Computer Science uses the software Spamassassin for this task. Each mail is automatically checked for certain criteria. If more than 4 criteria are fulfilled, the mail is marked automaticallyy as spam by adding additionnal header lines.

These are:

X-Spam-Flag
X-Spam-Report
X-Spam-Status
X-Spam-Level

Use the extra header lines to automatically sort all spam mail into a special folder.

On our new IMAP server this is already being done automatically. Mail marked as spam by the spam recognition software is therefore always to be found in the span folder.

Please take note, that individual sieve scripts only are executed after spam has been sorted into separate spam folders to ensure that no spam is forwarded.
