Services

These are some of the services offered by Technical Service. If you require further information, please consult our FAQ or contact the qualified contact person

Backup

Technical Service creates backups of all HOME-directories and of all users' systemmailboxes every day between 12 am and 3 am. This backup is saved on a RAID-system acquired especially for this purpose and is additionally secured to tapes once a week.

If you have deleted files accidentally, you can retrieve them yourself via your backup which is saved on a disk system.

You can find your backup under

/backup/<login>/<date>/

The required date is the date the backup was created.

One of the files in this directory is the file mailbox, in which the systemmailbox of the respective day is saved. Additionally, there is the directory home, in which the backup of HOME is saved.

User hugo then would get the following output:

% ls -l /backup/hugo

total 160

As one can see, backups of the last 30 days exist. Additionally, the backups of the first day of a month for the last 5 months are being saved.

DHCP

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)

Technical Services operates a DHCP server, which simplifies connecting computers to the departmental network to a high degree. For security reasons, only the MAC addresses need to be entered in the server. Staff members of the Department of Computer Science can send these via e-mail to admin@informatik.uni-kiel.de.

To use DHCP, utilize the network sockets marked with a red point.

DNS

Domain Name Service (DNS)

DNS resolves the internet protocol address (IP-address) belonging to a computer name. Practically, a worldwide network of DNS servers will fulfil this task, and every server on the network will resolve your address. Using the nearest server optimizes network traffic.

To solve the chicken and egg problem (DNS-requests are only possible, when you know a DNS server), you need to know the IP address of the DNS server and entered into the respective configuration file on the computer. This naturally has already been done for all computer administrated by Technical servers and computers, which received an IP address through DHCP.

The IP addresses of the official departmental nameservers are:

  • 134.245.248.201
  • 134.245.248.5

Please use these addresses on all computers on the Computer Science network.

If you need additional Domains for area-spanning projects, please send an email to:

admin@informatik.uni-kiel.de

Microsoft

There are several Microsoft license programs.

Current information can be found at the Rechenzentrum: https://www.rz.uni-kiel.de/de/angebote/software/microsoft/microsoft-lizenzen-ab-sommer-2016

The respective user is responsible for observing the license terms.

Terminal Server

Technik-Service maintains a cluster of terminal servers to power the thin clients in our computer pools. The operating system is Ubuntu 12.04 together with the LXDE desktop environment.

Our goals include to provide a mostly complete software installation on our desktop infrastructure. However, if you like to use some specific software package that is not currently installed, please do not hesitate to contact us via email to admin@informatik.uni-kiel.de.

Our terminal servers can also be accessed from your own computer by installing the ThinLinc Software Client. Please connect to isildur.informatik.uni-kiel.de.

Furthermore we provide ssh access to our servers. In this case please use <eomer|bombadil|beorn> for connecting.

Timeserver

Technical Services operates a DCF77-radio receiver (stratum 0), which controls a central stratum 1 timeserver. To ensure failure safety, we also run a stratum 2 timeserver.

The system time of the computer administrated by the computer operating group is coordinated by this timeserver. Computers, that are administrated by individuals, will use the stratum 1 timeserver

time1.informatik.uni-kiel.de

and/or the stratum 2 timeserver

time2.informatik.uni-kiel.de .

Matlab

The sortware package Matlab is installed on all workstations administrated by Technical Service. More detailed information on installation and usage of these software packages can be found on the webpage of the software account 'matlab', namely here. The software package Matlab is licensed.

Licenses
The Department of Computer Science and several workgroups of the department may make use of the Matlab campus license, administrated by the computer center. The validity of all licenses extends to the whole department. If you want to use a workgroup's license, consult them first. Find below the availbale licenses at the Department of Computer Science:
